OK, i know that may seem like a strange statement, stay with me and I’ll explain what I mean…
One minute in to this video and you’ll hear the producer Jimmy say that “To have control, excitement and passion at the same time – that’s what makes winners, winners and great singers, great singers.” That really made me stop and think because I thought you know what? That applies to business just the same!
I can take every one of my 7 Principles of Peak Peformance and that statement applies in one way or another. Without some measure of control and discipline, no amount of talent will bring success – not in a sustainable way. Think about businesses that do well when the economy is good or because they spotted a rising trend. If that business doesn’t keep paying attention to what sets it apart from the crowd, if they get distracted and over-confident and think they can do anything equally well then they’re probably heading for a fall. Excellence comes from mastery. Mastery comes from repetition. Understanding how to add more and more value and leverage that value comes from following the right strategies for your particular blend of talent and strengths.
At the same time, if a business is all control and discipline but no passion and excitement then how are employees and customers going to be excited enough to stay and not be seduced by something more passionate and exciting elsewhere? (Note that different Talent Dynamics Profiles will show their excitement differently. For instance if a Star or Supporter is excited everybody knows about it! On the other hand an Accumulator could be really excited and passionate about something and even their face wouldn’t show it – they still feel it though…)
When people are in their flow, they get more and more excited because things are easier and more fun. What we teach people to do with Talent Dynamics is to match their role to their Talent Dynamics Profile and their industry to their passion. Then they have the mix of strategies to follow (control and discipline) and really get into flow (passion and excitement) and massively increase performance and profits.
Like most things in life, it’s a balance. How are you doing in your career or business – are you getting your balance right?
